Some new smart meters are now capable of running the Sense Home app, giving you real-time insights into your energy use. Many electricity providers are installing these next-generation meters—and when they do, you’ll likely get a notification letting you know that your home is eligible to connect.
Once you're notified, you can begin using the Sense Home app to monitor your energy use, to identify waste, and to save on your electricity bill.

What Is an Electric Meter?
Every home has an electric meter that measures how much electricity your home consumes. It’s usually a metal box with a clear display showing total usage, like this:

📍 Your electric meter is different from your electrical panel (also called a circuit breaker box), which controls power to different areas of your home.

Where Can You Find Your Electric Meter?
Electric meters can be located in several places depending on the type of home:
-
Single-family homes:
Typically installed on an outside wall, porch, or in a utility room or closet. -
Multi-unit buildings:
Often grouped in a basement, garage, or utility room, with one meter per unit. -
Meter banks:
May be housed in a provider-controlled box located away from individual homes but between the power source and the property.
How Close Should You Be During Setup?
To connect to your new meter using the Sense Home app, you’ll need to be physically near your electric meter. Here are some important tips:
-
Stay within 5 to 15 feet of the meter during setup
-
Face the meter with a clear line of sight (avoid walls or obstructions)
-
Do not touch the meter—your device can connect wirelessly
-
Keep both your phone and yourself still throughout the setup process
-
If your meter is mounted higher up, such as on a pole, standing below it should still work
When Should I Set Up?
Setup requires a few uninterrupted minutes, so pick a time that works best for you:
-
Choose a time with comfortable weather if your meter is outdoors
-
If your connection is interrupted, you can start over at any time in the Sense app—no need to worry
