The Sense Home app tells you what devices are operating in your home, and how often or how long they run. This information helps you make smart usage choices to save energy and money.
Select utility companies are replacing old electric meters with new Wi-Fi-enabled smart meters that run the free Sense Home app. Starting in fall 2024, some National Grid homes in Central Upstate New York will be eligible, and more homes and more regions will follow beginning in 2025.
Is this an option for me?
If National Grid is your electricity provider, they will notify you when they have replaced your old meter with a Sense-enabled smart meter and invite you to connect to the free Sense Home app. If you have another electricity provider and Sense is not available in your area, fill out the form at the bottom of this page and we'll let you know when Sense is available where you live.
Will the Sense Home app work in every home with a Sense-enabled electric meter?
The Sense Home app requires a stable Wi-Fi connection between your router or mesh-network access point and the Sense-enabled electric meter.
Sense’s Wi-Fi requirements are no different from many other IoT devices you may already have in your home, such as having a modern Wi-Fi router and strong signal strength between your electric smart meter and the router. The Wi-Fi network must be secured by a password, as no open networks or personal hotspots are reliable.
How will I know when I'm eligible?
If all of these questions apply to you, you might be able to use the Sense Home app through your new smart meter:
- Has your utility installed a Sense-enabled smart meter at your home?
- Has your utility invited you to connect to the free Sense Home app?
- Does your home have strong and consistent Wi-Fi via a secured network?
Can I get Sense any other way?
Yes, the Sense Home app is also available through the Sense Home Energy Monitor, which you can purchase to install in your electrical panel. See our website for more info.
