Sense can work with several electrical panel configurations in the United States and Canada. This article lists these configurations and specifies space needed in a panel for the Sense components. It also explains how to work around large distances between panels.

What Panels Are Compatible?
120/240V Split-phase service
The Sense Home Energy Monitor is compatible with split-phase 120/240V residential electrical panels in North America. Individual panels up to 200A are also compatible. We do not fully support three-phase or parallel feed configurations at this time.
400A Split-service
Sense can work with split-service systems up to 400A where service is provided via dual panels, provided Solar is not in use. This feature requires use of the monitor’s auxiliary port. Data from both panels will be combined in the Sense app. Installation instructions for a 400A split-service are here.
Subpanels
Sense can monitor subpanels that are electrically downstream from the main panel.
Combination panels (sometimes called bus bar)
Some panel boxes have a combination panel instead of cables. This configuration works as long as there is enough clearance for the current sensors to clamp around the combination panel. Please refer to the dimensions illustrated below.
Recessed or flush-mounted panels
Sense is compatible with recessed panels. Read more about how to install Sense in recessed panels here.
Outdoor installations
For Sense to be installed outdoors, it must be enclosed inside an appropriate NEMA-rated enclosure, and adequately protected from the elements. Sense is compatible only in the following environmental conditions:
- Relative humidity <90%; IPX0 rating, no water ingress
- Temperature: 32-154ºF (0-68ºC)
- Elevation < 6562' (2,000m)
Will Sense Components Fit Into My Electrical Panel?
Sense Home Energy Monitor and antenna
The Sense Monitor can be installed in the interior or exterior of an electrical panel. Its antenna, however, must be outside the panel (at top, bottom, or any side where it fits) to maintain proper wireless connectivity (Figure A).To position the antenna securely, utilize the knockout plugs built into all panels.

Note: If the Sense Monitor cannot fit in the interior of the panel with the current sensors, Sense includes a wall mount you can use to position the Monitor next to the panel. This article offers instructions on how to place the Monitor outside your panel. |
Current sensors
Your panel must have enough space to fit one or more Sense current sensor clamps with dimensions of H 3.375" x W 2" x D 0.75" (85.73 x 50.8 x 19.05mm) and an inside diameter of 1” (25.4mm) (Figures B and C).
Sensor cables are 46" (116.84cm) long* and the power cable is 36" (91.44cm) long (Figure C).
