One of the first things you should do when you start to use the Sense Home app is to set your electricity rate. If you don't set your local rate, Sense can only default your cost to the national or state average.
In 2025, Sense has added a feature to help you set your rate more easily. If you take a few minutes to locate your most recent bill and use the new tool in the Sense Home app, you will get more accurate estimates of your specific electricity cost.
Single Cost Plan
Start by going to Settings > Electricity Info
- If your rate relies on an average, we now alert you to this fact.
- To add in your actual rate, choose the Help Me Find My Rate button.
Now, follow the instructions. These ask you to add your most recent monthly charge and the total kWh reported with that charge.

Why Can't I Just Enter Cost per kWh?
Calculating this way helps Sense more closely estimate the total effective cost per kWh, including delivery costs and other possible fees, which can vary significantly from one utility company to another. This method ensures a much closer estimate of your monthly costs.
What if my billing cycle doesn't start on the first of the month?
If a billing cycle start date is set, most Usage features in the app will default to “Bill” view; if the date is not set, these features will show “Month” view. The article in our Help Center, How do I set billing cycle(s) in the Sense app? tells more about setting an alternatiave billing cycle start date.
