Why does my Sense-enabled meter need a Wi-Fi connection?
You will need your home Wi-Fi network information to finish setting up your electric meter. The Sense app receives energy usage information from your meter using your Wi-Fi connection.
Why do I need my network name & password?
During setup, Sense will prompt you to select your home Wi-Fi network and password. At this stage, your device will be paired to your meter, so you will not have internet access and you must stay in place to finish setup.
The Sense-enabled electric meter needs a Wi-Fi connection to display your home’s energy information in your Sense app.
- During setup, you configure your meter to your home’s Wi-Fi network using your network name (SSID) and password. This is for your security. Sense does not work with open networks or hotspots to ensure that no one else can access information about how (and when) your household uses electricity.
- Your device (mobile phone or tablet) will be paired to the meter as Sense configures the Wi-Fi. This means that for just a few minutes your device won’t be able to access Wi-Fi for any other kind of search.
How can I find my Wi-Fi name & password ahead of time?
- Find your network name (SSID), which is the name associated with your Wi-Fi router.
- On your device, look for available networks. Find your home Wi-Fi icon and note any spelling particulars, including upper/lower case letters, punctuation marks, or special symbols.
- You’ll also need your password to complete the connection. People often save passwords in several likely places. Find the password and keep it handy during the entire setup process:
- Personal: You may have created a record using a photo, a password manager, or a note. The password may also be included in documentation associated with your router or internet service provider.
- Network: Your internet service provider often writes the password right on the router with the network name.
- Digital: You may have used a computer keychain product, such as LastPass, and can find your password there. If you use Apple devices, here’s some help: example
- If all else fails, contact your internet service provider to ask for help resetting the password.
- What should I expect? Two things you won’t be able to do during the few minutes when your device is paired to the meter:
- Lookup your Wi-Fi password in a cloud based storage app that requires connectivity (ex. Google photos, Lastpass) because you won’t have Internet on that device.
- Move away from your meter to find your password somewhere in your home. You should remain 5-15 feet from the meter during the setup process. If you must move away, you will likely need to restart the setup process.
