Once you’ve created your Sense Home account and connected it to Wi-Fi, Sense begins learning the patterns in your home’s electrical usage. Soon, you’ll see notifications that a device has been detected—such as a heat source or motor. Sense may suggest a few possible matches and then ask you to confirm the correct name, since you know your home best.
What to Expect
- The first devices may appear within 2–3 days, though it can sometimes take 1–2 weeks
- Sense continues to identify devices well beyond this early period
- Detection improves with repeated or extended use of each appliance
- Your participation (confirming and naming devices, and feedback) helps Sense learn more accurately
One thing you don’t need to do: list every device in your home yourself. Sense’s machine learning does the heavy lifting. Smart plugs can help track certain devices if needed, but many homes don’t require them at all.
Tips While You Wait
There’s plenty you can do while device detection progresses:
-
Learn the app: Explore reports and dashboards, and read guides at the Help Center
or browse our blogs - Fine-tune your settings: Add your electricity rate, set time-of-use schedules, or adjust billing start date (Settings > Electricity Info > Billing Cycle Start Day)
- Set goals: Learn about setting goals and start to track your progress. Here's how
- Watch your in-app Meter: Use the live view to flip devices on and off and see their impact right away
- Find “always-on” loads: Walk through your home to spot devices that never power down—sometimes called energy vampires—and see if you can reduce or replace them
- Use smart plugs if available: If you already have them, configure the Sense app to report their usage details
Sense learns more each day it runs in your home. With your input and a little patience, you’ll start to see a clearer picture of where your energy goes—and how to save.
