For your Sense system—and other smart home devices—to work reliably, your home Wi-Fi must be properly configured and positioned for strong, consistent connectivity. Follow the steps below to ensure your network is optimized for a great Sense experience.
Step 1: Use a Modern Router
If your router is more than five years old, it’s time for an upgrade.
Homes with many smart devices may benefit from routers that are two to three years old or newer.
You can upgrade through your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or purchase a router yourself.
To access your router settings:
Use the router's companion app, or
Search online for your router’s make and model + “login instructions.”
Step 2: Ensure You're Using the Correct Bandwidth
Modern routers often support both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands. Sense uses 2.4GHz because it provides better range—ideal for devices that don’t need high-speed downloads.
Here’s how to ensure compatibility:
Make sure your router broadcasts 2.4GHz, and give it a unique SSID (network name) so Sense connects to the right band.
If needed, set up a guest network that uses only 2.4GHz.
Enable auto-channel selection if your router supports it, or manually set the channel to 1, 6, or 11.
Confirm that the router or access point nearest your Sense monitor supports and broadcasts 2.4GHz.
Step 3: Optimize Signal Strength
Strong Wi-Fi signal strength ensures your Sense stays connected without interruption. Ideal signal strength is between –35 dBm (strongest) and –65 dBm (acceptable).
Here’s how to improve it:
Position your router or access point within 5 to 20 feet of your Sense system.
(Too close—less than 5 feet—can also cause issues. Think of it like sitting too close to a speaker.)Avoid interference from walls, metal appliances, or other electronics.

A Wi-Fi extender or booster
A mesh network to expand coverage
Contact your ISP for help configuring or upgrading your network.

Step 4: Use Compatible Security Settings
Sense requires WPA2 security encryption. Please note:
Ensure your network is password-protected (Sense can’t connect to open or unsecured networks)
