The Sense Home app delivers real-time, personalized energy insights by connecting your Sense-enabled smart meter to your home Wi-Fi. For the best experience, you’ll need a strong, stable signal—ideally with your router or mesh access point placed close to the electric meter, and with enough bandwidth and minimal interference.
At this time, Sense-enabled smart meters don’t support homes with solar panels. If you have solar and want to start using Sense right away, you can purchase a Sense Energy Monitor instead (more information below).
If you have opted out of remote metering with your electricity provider, you will not be able to connect to Sense.
Note: To connect to Sense, you need to be home, close to your electric meter.
✅ Getting Connected: What You Need to Know
Choose Your Network
During setup, the app will prompt you to select your home’s Wi-Fi network from a list of those in range.
- If your network isn’t listed, you can type in the network name manually.
- If that fails, your signal may be too weak—see our tips below to improve connection strength.
Use a Secured Network
- Your network must be password-protected to connect to Sense.
- Unsure of your password? Check the sticker on your router. If it’s not there, you may need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.
Recommended Wi-Fi Range
If Sense-enabled meter is located outside, it’s important to consider how close it is to your Wi-Fi source:
- Ideally, your router or access point should be within 20 feet of the meter.
- If signal strength is low, try one or both of the following:
- Move your router closer to the outside wall near the meter
- Install a Wi-Fi access point, repeater, or mesh node within 20 feet of the meter
Use the Right Band and Security
Sense requires:
- A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band, which offers better range than 5GHz
- WPA2 encryption for secure, stable connections

⚠️ Important Note for Solar Users
Currently, Sense-enabled smart meters are not compatible with homes that have solar panels installed. We’re working on future support, but in the meantime, you can still monitor your solar energy:
-
👉 Purchase a Sense Solar Home Energy Monitor
Have it installed by a licensed electrician to track solar production and energy usage directly from your home’s electrical panel.
