Sense is partnering with electricity providers across the country to bring powerful energy insights to homes through next-generation smart meters. Below are some of the most common questions about the partnership and how Sense works on your smart meter.
What Is Sense?
Sense is a mobile app that helps you manage your home’s energy usage in real time. Using advanced machine learning, Sense reads the electrical signals in your home to identify how and when your appliances are running—giving you visibility into your energy use from your phone or tablet.

How Can I Get a Sense-Enabled Smart Meter?
We’re actively partnering with utilities nationwide to install Sense-enabled smart meters (AMI 2.0) in more homes. If your electricity provider is rolling out these meters, you’ll be notified when your home becomes eligible.
📌 Note: Homes with solar panels are not yet compatible with Sense-enabled smart meters. We're working on support for solar monitoring in the future.
Is Sense Free With My Smart Meter?
Yes! There are no subscription fees—from Sense or your utility—to use the Sense Home app with a smart meter. Your data will never be sold.
Thanks to energy efficiency programs in your area, Sense is compensated when you shift energy usage to off-peak times or reduce overall use. That means:
-
You save money
-
Your utility gains flexibility
-
We all help the environment (which is our mission!)
Will using a Sense-enabled meter increase my electric bill?
No, there are no setup or subscription fees to use the Sense Home app. And utilities do not charge customers directly for installing a Sense-enabled smart meter.
Electricity providers invest in smart meter rollouts, which include behind-the-scenes work like:
-
Upgrading network communications
-
Strengthening cybersecurity
-
Ensuring system readiness
The actual installation of Sense-enabled smart meters will take place over years.
Where Can I Download the Sense Home App?
You can find the Sense Home app on both major platforms:
You’ll need a Sense-enabled smart meter or a Sense Home Energy Monitor to use the app.
Do I Need a Smart Meter to Use the App?
No. If your utility hasn’t rolled out a smart meter yet, you can purchase a Sense Home Energy Monitor at sense.com.
We recommend having a licensed electrician install it in your home’s electrical panel.
Can I Transfer My Data From My Monitor to a Meter?
Unfortunately, data and device history cannot be transferred from your Sense monitor account to a new meter account. The systems are treated separately.
Do I Need Wi-Fi at Home?
Yes. A secure, stable Wi-Fi connection is essential to deliver real-time insights through the Sense Home app.
Sense has the same Wi-Fi needs as most smart home devices:
-
A modern Wi-Fi router
-
Strong signal between your meter and router
-
A secured network (no open Wi-Fi or hotspots)
