Sense is a mobile app for iOS and Android that helps you understand and manage your home’s energy use in real time—directly from your phone or tablet. Sense analyzes your home’s electrical patterns and provides you with insight into real time energy usage. Over time, it will identify some specific appliances based on their unique electrical signatures.
The result? A smarter, more efficient home—and lower electricity bills.
What Sense Does
Sense gives you a real-time picture of your home’s energy use and helps you answer questions like:
-
What’s using the most electricity right now?
-
When do certain appliances run, and for how long?
-
Where can I save energy—and money?
These insights help you reduce your carbon footprint while making smarter decisions about how and when you use electricity.
Getting Started
From the moment your Sense system is connected, the Now and Meter screens begin displaying real-time energy use throughout your home.
-
Use the Watt Check tool (under the Dashboard) to get instant feedback on how much power certain devices use.
-
As data builds, Sense will populate your Dashboard with deeper insights—like monthly usage reports and comparisons over time.
Automatic Device Detection
Sense uses machine learning to detect devices over time. Here's what to expect:
-
Within the first week, Sense may begin identifying appliances that cycle on and off frequently—like refrigerators, dryers, or microwaves.
-
Over the next few weeks to months, Sense will gather enough contextual data to recognize other devices operating in more complex or irregular ways.
Each time Sense isolates a device, it will ask you to name it based on your knowledge of your home.
Optimizing Your Sense Experience
To get the most accurate and timely insights, follow these tips:
-
Ensure strong Wi-Fi signal strength between your router and the Sense system. Learn more about Wi-Fi optimization.
-
Collaborate with Sense by naming devices accurately and consistently as they’re detected.
-
Merge device components when needed. Some appliances, like dishwashers, may appear as multiple device signatures (e.g., motor and heating element). Merging them ensures more accurate tracking.
-
Continue to use the app regularly. Over time, Sense improves its ability to identify newer or less common devices based on your input and our broader machine learning models.
