National Grid has already begun to replace older electric meters with Sense-enabled meters in New York, and early access has been rolled out to a limited number of homes. Hold off on logging in until general availability is announced. |
Here are answers to some questions people often ask about the Sense partnership with some utility companies who are rolling out smart meters.
What is Sense?
Sense is a mobile app that helps you simply manage your home energy use directly from your phone. It uses machine learning to read your home’s electrical current, and analyzes each appliance’s unique electrical signature, giving you a real-time picture of your home’s energy usage.

How can I get a smart meter (AMI) with Sense?
We’re partnering with a growing number of electricity providers nationwide to get Sense installed on next-generation smart meters. Our first deployment will be in partnership with National Grid in Central Upstate New York, beginning this fall. We are actively working to develop partnerships with providers across the United States and will provide updates as new Sense-enabled smart meters roll out.
NOTE: At this time, customers with solar panels are unable to use the Sense Home app with Sense-enabled electric meters.
Is Sense free through my new smart meter?
Yes, it is. Neither Sense nor your utility charge subscription fees to use the Sense Home app, and we won’t sell your personal data.
Energy programs in your state allow Sense to be paid when you reduce your energy use or shift the times you use your appliances to when energy is less in demand. You save money, your utility can better manage the grid, and everyone benefits. Plus, the environment also benefits, which makes us very happy. In fact, it’s our mission.
Where can I download the Sense Home app?
You will need to use the Sense Home app with either a Sense-enabled smart meter or a Sense Home Energy Monitor that you purchase. The Sense Home app is available at the Google Play Store and at Apple App Store.
Do I need a Sense-enabled electric meter to use the Sense Home app?
No, and since Sense-enabled smart meters are being rolled out in limited locations starting fall 2024, we understand that you might be interested in using the Sense Home app sooner than a meter is available to your home. You can purchase a Sense Home Energy Monitor at our website. If you order this monitor, we strongly recommend that you hire a licensed electrician to install it.
Can Sense transfer my data from my monitor account to a meter account?
No, unfortunately we are not able to transfer your data and device information to a new account.
Do I need Wi-Fi at home to use Sense on my new smart meter?
Yes, getting the Sense Home App and your smart meter connected to your home’s Wi-Fi is needed to provide you with the powerful, personalized home energy insights you expect from us. Sense’s Wi-Fi requirements are no different from many other IoT devices you may already have in your home, such as having a modern Wi-Fi router and strong signal strength between your electric smart meter and the router.
