Phased rollout is happening. National Grid and Sense are rolling out the Sense integration in a limited number of homes. Hold off on logging in until general availability is announced. If you have a Sense-enabled meter and would like to be a part of the roll out, click here. |
Here are answers to some questions people often ask about the Sense partnership with some utility companies who are rolling out smart meters.
What is Sense?
Sense is an iOS and Android mobile app that helps you easily manage your home energy use directly from your phone or tablet. It uses software that analyzes your home’s electrical voltage, giving you a real-time picture of your home’s energy use, and identifies specific appliances by recognizing their unique electronic signature.

How can I get a smart meter (AMI) with Sense?
In 2024, Sense becomes available to a limited number of electric utility customers. Our first deployment is in partnership with National Grid in New York State.
Infrastructure updates like this take years to implement, and Sense is actively working to develop partnerships with electric utilities around the United States. In 2025, the National Grid roll out will expand and more utilities will begin to deploy Sense-enabled meters to their customers.
NOTE: At this time, customers with solar panels are unable to use the Sense Home app with Sense-enabled electric meters.
Is Sense free through my new smart meter?
Yes, it is. Neither Sense nor your utility charge subscription fees to use the Sense Home app, and we won’t sell your personal data. Energy programs in your state allow Sense to be paid when you reduce your energy use or shift the times you use your appliances for when energy is less in demand. You save money, your utility can better manage the grid, and everyone benefits. Plus, the environment benefits too, which makes us very happy. In fact, it’s our mission.
Where can I download the Sense Home app?
You will need to use the Sense Home app with either a Sense-enabled smart meter or a Sense Home Energy Monitor that you purchase. The Sense Home app is available at the Google Play Store and at Apple App Store.
Do I need a Sense-enabled electric meter to use the Sense Home app?
No. If you're interested in using the Sense Home app sooner than a smart meter is available at your home, you can purchase a Sense Home Energy Monitor here. If you order this monitor, we strongly recommend that you hire a licensed electrician to install it.
Can Sense transfer my data from my monitor account to a meter account?
No, unfortunately we are not able to transfer your data and device information to a new account.
Do I need Wi-Fi at home to use Sense on my new smart meter?
The Sense Home app requires a stable Wi-Fi connection between your router or mesh-network access point and the Sense-enabled electric meter. Connectivity is a function of many variables including distance, bandwidth, interference and hardware. Homes with sufficient bandwidth, minimum interference, and a Wi-Fi access point in close proximity to the Sense-enabled electric meter are likely to successfully connect. There are not yet specific guidelines for each variable and no alternative at this time.
