Starting December 31, 2025 (and possibly sooner), Sense will no longer sell home monitors to be installed in electrical panels. Instead, Sense technology is being built directly into next-generation smart meters through partnerships with utility providers nationwide—bringing real-time, device-level energy insights to more homes with no extra hardware required.
The Sense Home app isn’t going anywhere. We’re continuing to expand detection capabilities for devices like EVs, variable-speed heat pumps, and now solar systems.
If you already own a Sense Home Energy Monitor, Support will continue as usual. This transition makes Sense more accessible than ever and helps accelerate the future of home and grid intelligence.
Our CEO has created this blog article to explain the decision.
And for your more particular questions about what’s changing (and what’s not), we’ve gathered answers in the Sense FAQs, below.
General Questions
Why is Sense ending the sale of the Home Energy Monitor?
Our mission is to get energy saving tools into the hands of as many people as possible. We’ve found that the most effective way to do this is by offering the Sense app through utilities who are rolling out new smart meters. This makes it possible to offer the Sense App for free to anyone with one of those meters. With that, we’re retiring our consumer hardware manufacturing to focus on the Sense app for meter and existing monitor customers.
When will the monitor officially go off the market?
We will stop selling the Sense Monitor on December 31, 2025 or when we run out of inventory, whichever comes first.
Is this decision permanent?
Yes.
What does this mean for the future of Sense?
We’re just getting started. By shifting our focus to software through the meter, we can reach more homes than ever before. It means faster innovation, deeper insights, and a smarter path to decarbonization for everyone.
What’s replacing the Sense monitor, if anything?
Your new smart meter. Our app is now embedded in the latest generation of smart meters being rolled out by many utilities across the country. That means no extra install, just free and instant access to the energy insights you love. To find out if your electricity provider is offering Sense, visit here.
When will I be able to access Sense using my smart meter?
In order for Sense to operate, your utility will need to have adopted next generation meters that can support our software. This will be different for every utility. Please check our meter eligibility page to see if you're eligible, and if not, your utility may be able to tell you when they plan to upgrade to Sense capable meters.
Is Sense shutting down its consumer business?
Serving everyday people by providing energy insights is a core pillar of our business. That will never go away. The thing that is changing is how we deliver consumer insights, which will now be through utility partnerships and the smart meter.
How does this move align with your utility strategy?
It’s a perfect match. Our goal is to help utilities engage their customers and manage the grid more efficiently. Embedding Sense into smart meters lets us do both at scale, and in real time.
Will Sense technology be available through my utility? When?
To find out if your meter is eligible for Sense yet, visit our Eligibility Page, which will also direct you to a form if you want to be notified when your home might become eligible.
How does this change support Sense’s mission of decarbonization?
By giving more people real-time energy insights, we’re helping reduce waste at scale. When you understand your energy use, you use less—and that’s good for your wallet and the planet.
What should current or potential users expect from Sense next?
More innovation, less hardware. We’re doubling down on smarter software with faster insights, new features, and tools that help you save energy without the guesswork. Whether you use the Sense Home app through a monitor or through an electric meter, the best of Sense is still ahead.

Yes. We will continue to support our monitor customers as we do currently.

Can I still access my energy data through the app?
Yes. Your energy data is still available to you as it has been in the past.
Will Sense still detect new devices in my home?
Yes. Our products will still detect new devices, and we’ll continue to innovate to improve device detection in your home.
Will I still receive energy reports?
Yes. If you have Energy Snapshot enabled for your account, you will still receive monthly or weekly energy reports. You can view and change this under Settings > Notifications > Energy Snapshot.
Is customer support still available for current users?
Yes. Our customer support team is still here and ready to help. You can find all the ways to reach us here: How Do I Contact Support?
Will I still receive security updates or patches if needed?
Yes. We remain committed to ensuring you have a secure Sense experience and that you receive security updates when needed.
Now that you’re not focused on the monitor business, will you sell my data?
No. We will not sell your data.
How long will my product last?
While nothing lasts forever, with no moving parts, you can expect your Sense monitor to last as long as the components within it do. Some factors such as temperature and exposure to humidity may affect the lifespan of the monitor hardware, but based on our current knowledge of the electrical components within it, 10 years from the purchase date is a reasonable guideline. Sense started selling monitors in 2016, and many of those are still in use today.
Can I just move my Sense app over to my meter?
At this time, your data cannot be migrated from a Sense monitor account to a new Sense meter account. Please see this article for more details.
Can I have Sense accounts for both my monitor and my meter?
Yes, as long as you use different email addresses for each one.
Can I move my monitor to another home or give it to a friend?
Yes, you should first reset your Sense monitor from within the Sense app while the Sense monitor is still online and connected to your home Wi-Fi. To do this:
- Go to Settings > Account > Delete Account & Erase Data
- This process will erase all data associated with your account. Learn more about when to reset your data here.
- The new owner can create a new Sense account and reinstall the Sense monitor in the new electrical panel. Sense recommends they hire an electrician to do this.
⚠️ Important: If the monitor is sold or given to another user, the product warranty will no longer be valid.
If you’re moving and want to use your Sense monitor in another home:
- Complete the account deletion process above.
- Have the Sense monitor removed from your current electric panel. Sense recommends you hire an electrician to do this.
- You can then connect the system in your new home after creating a new account. See full moving guidance here.
Will my warranty still be valid after sales end?
Yes. Our warranty remains valid for one year with proof of purchase. If you purchased your Sense monitor from a licensed reseller within the past year, your warranty will still be honored. You can review full warranty details here: Warranty for the Sense Home Energy Monitor.
What if I need a replacement monitor?
Sense guarantees that its hardware will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of delivery following original retail purchase. This guarantee extends to all Sense monitors sold from a certified reseller. You may need to provide proof of that purchase and delivery date. If Sense needs to replace your existing monitor, we would replace it with one of our many refurbished replacement monitors reserved for our customers. Our support team will remain here to support all our new and existing customers and assist with ensuring your product is performing as expected.
Can I still upgrade my basic monitor with a 2nd set of CTs to support solar or add dedicated circuit monitoring/generator support or 2nd panel support? (E.g., I’m installing solar next year)
Yes, if you have the CTs available to use or if you can find sensors for sale on a reseller site once they are no longer available for purchase from Sense.
Questions For Prospective Buyers
Can I still buy a Sense monitor through resellers?
Yes. But these products will not have a warranty.
Are any alternative products available?
There are a few options on the market for home monitoring that are similar, though not identical, to the Sense Home Energy Monitor. One example for consideration is Emporia.

- The warranty will not be valid for the person who receives your monitor.
Will the Sense app work if I purchase a monitor secondhand?
Yes, if the hardware is fully functional and has been Factory Reset as instructed here.
