Sense is carefully designed and thoroughly tested to deliver accurate energy readings. But in some cases, you might notice a difference between what you see in your Sense app and what appears on your electric bill.
Here are a few common reasons why—and what you can do about them.
What Causes the Difference?
Tiered rates or demand charges
Sense currently doesn’t support tiered pricing or demand-based rates. These rate structures can significantly affect your bill and are something we plan to support in future updates.
Taxes, fees, and discounts
Utility bills often include extra charges like taxes, delivery fees, or special discounts. These aren’t included in the Sense app’s usage estimates.
Data interruptions
Temporary Wi-Fi issues or power outages can cause brief gaps in your data. If your monitor goes offline frequently, check this guide for tips—or contact Support for help.
Solar setup not configured
If you have solar panels but haven’t set up Sense Solar (presently available only on Sense Home Energy monitors), your energy usage and cost estimates may be off. Learn more about monitoring solar with Sense here.
Using Time-of-Use (TOU) Billing?
You can set up your Sense app to better reflect TOU rates. Learn how to get started with TOU billing setup.
Still Seeing a Big Difference?
If none of the above apply and the discrepancy seems unusually large, please contact our Support team. We’re happy to help you get it sorted.
